Pinterest for Business Guidelines

Pinterest for Business Guidelines

Online Biz Smarts focused on Pinterest for Business this past week (presented by Connie Ryan)

by Dale Dillon Lips

To re-iterate some of the points that Connie made regarding Pinterest for business guidelines, rules and the importance of backlinks:

Business Accounts

If you are using Pinterest for commercial purposes, you must create a business account and agree to the Pinterest Business Terms of Services.  The business account was introduced recently, so it is now important for you to establish a business account that is separate from your personal account.

Your Copyrighted Content

If you post your content on Pinterest, it still belongs to you but Pinterest can show it to people and others can re-pin it.  If you do not want your Pins downloaded and used by other Pinners, you must copyright or trademark the image.

If you do not want your Pins re-pinned, you can also add a piece of code to the top of any page on your site, that will prevent re-pinning:

<meta name="pinterest" content="nopin" />

When a user tries to pin from your site, they will see this message:

“This site doesn’t allow pinning to Pinterest. Please contact the owner with any questions. Thanks for visiting!” Pinterest

You can also prevent the re-pinning of a specific pin by adding this code to the :

<img src="foo.jpg" nopin="nopin" />

Others Copyrighted Content

Make sure that you respect copyrights and trademarks of others.  Pinterest provides a complaint form for those that feel their images have been used improperly.  You may be sued if you violate the copyright.  If you do not see a copyright or trademark, you still must respect and credit your source.

Always check to make sure your Pins have links back to your original source (website or blog usually).  It is best if the backlink goes to a specifically relevant page on your website, not just the home page.

Check your Re-Pins as well!  According to Pinterest, “Pins are the most useful when they have links back to the original source. If you notice that a pin is not sourced correctly, leave a comment so the original pinner can update the source.”

To check the backlink, simply go to “edit pin” and look at the “Link” bar.  In this case, it shows the slideshare link.  However, it is a slideshow that belongs to Online Biz Smarts and is contained on a blog post.  Therefore, it is fine to change the link to Online Biz Smarts blog page.
